Maternity Sessions

Remembering this special time in your life is just as important as any other major event, and deserves proper planning to capture this transition in your life.

When should I contact you to book my session?

Maternity sessions are best done in the beginning of your third trimester, between 28-35 weeks so your belly is big and beautiful, but you won’t be too uncomfortable yet. This is the time you want to look nice and round, yes I said it round! These are the kinds of photos we are looking for. Every pregnancy is different, and scheduling the right time would vary. Try not to schedule too late in your pregnancy that you are totally uncomfortable moving and posing. You also obviously don’t want to schedule too late, in case of an an early arrival.

Where do the sessions take place?

I love to shoot expecting moms in beautiful outdoor locations. If you are looking for a more intimate or lifestyle session we can shoot at your home as well.

Can my partner and/or children be in the photos?

Yes, of course! Any immediate family that you would like in the photos may join the shoot. This is a beautiful and joyous time for a family and all the important people should be included so that they can help welcome the newest addition during the photo session. Fury friends are welcome to join as well!

What should I wear for my session?

I recommend you wear whatever you are comfortable in! From sweats to fancy dresses, its your portrait so I want it to reflect you. With that being said, I can recommend solid colors, use of layers with a cardigan or sweater, a bandeau top (also called a tube top/crop top- to show off the belly). It can be anything from a pair of maternity jeans and a top, a pretty dress or any other outfit you feel confident in.  I also recommend you bring any items that will have special meaning for the baby – a piece of baby clothing, baby shoes or a special toy for instance.

How do I prepare for the session?

Not too much preparation is required on your part, but here are some pointers to help you feel your best when the camera is on you!

  •  The day of the shoot, don’t wear tight clothing, bras or other constricting bands; this will avoid marks on your skin.
  • Steer clear of salt the day before and day of your shoot to prevent bloating. Drink plenty of water and get a good night’s rest before your shoot.
  • Have nails manicured (hands are often the highlight of a photo)- make sure any family members who will be participating also have clean nails.

How should I do my makeup? Should I have it done professionally?

It is totally up to you! Many women prefer a natural look for maternity photos. To achieve a face you are comfortable with but also translates well in photos, I recommend applying makeup as you normally would for daytime, but be sure to accentuate your cheek bones and wear plenty of mascara.

How long does the session take?

Maternity sessions are 45 minutes in length and allow for approximately 3 outfit changes. We capture a variety of images of mom alone and encourage dad to come along for a greater variety and showcase both happy parents-to-be. If you already have children I capture them with parents before the baby arrives.

What if I have a blemish or stretch marks ?

Blemishes, minor stretch marks, bruises and scratches should not be cause for worry.  But have no fear, Photoshop is near! I retouch all of your images before you ever see them and  these imperfections are not a problem.

Do I have to be nude?

No, no, not at all! You can be as clothed, or as bare as you want. I always start with clothed shots and follow the client’s lead. It is up to you how artistic you’d like to get. Some clients prefer boudoir maternity shoots which are absolutely GORGEOUS. If you are interested in incorporating that kind of style into your session, we can discuss it and plan accordingly.
